Unplanned trip Kumbakonam to Madurai A Sudden U-Turn Home
October 11, 2025, 12:19 a.m. I've just started writing this blog post.
This whole adventure started moments ago at the Kumbakonam Chaiwala tea shop.
The conversation, initially covering random things, suddenly turned to a weekend outing. Each of us pitched a different place. I suggested Karaikal Beach. My friend Jayakumar mentioned Thanjavur and Trichy. Jeroen put forward Madurai.
Suddenly, everyone accepted Madurai... except one friend, Vigneswaren, who told us, "No, I'm not coming. You guys go." The conversation happened between 11:20 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. For the next 10 to 15 minutes, we tried to convince him. Finally, he accepted!
After everyone went home, we made plans to meet at the railway station in the morning. Since I sometimes crash at Jayakumar’s house late at night, I was already there, and I tried to take a picture very carefully so I wouldn't disturb his sleep.
I'm going to sleep now. Bye! See you all at 4:30 a.m. at the railway station.
Good Morning, 3:08 a.m.
I woke up early.
We are currently at the Kumbakonam Railway Station, waiting for our train. We are catching the 3:15 a.m. Madurai Mahal Superfast Express. This is the second time we're taking this specific train. Last time, we went to the Madurai Book Fair. Since that's all we did then, we planned to explore other places in Madurai this time.
Time 4:26 a.m. We are inside the train.
Morning Arrival
I woke up again at 6:39 a.m. because we were almost in Madurai!
6:41 a.m. We are currently passing through Dindigul Junction. My friend Viki also woke up. The view of the Dindigul mountain in the morning light is so amazing!

We officially reached Madurai at 7:29 a.m.
We are currently in the hotel at 7:50 a.m. We chose it because it's just outside the station exit, which is very comfortable.
After checking in and having breakfast, we made sure to grab a strong cup of tea ☕ before starting our walk. It took us just 7 to 10 minutes to reach the Meenakshi Amman Temple.
The Trip Takes a Turn to un imaginable one
All unplanned trips have Also Have lot of suspense.
I say this because our trip was interrupted by a sudden call to my friend Jeroen. His family informed him that they had to admit his elder sister to the hospital because she was crying out in pain.
(For context, Jeroen's elder sister is eight months pregnant.)
We had already given our luggage and phones to the locker room (yes, phones are strictly not allowed in the Meenakshi Amman Temple). After Jeroen received this devastating news, we all lost our interest in traveling. Jeroen suggested we wait for a second call from his mother.
We decided to go inside the temple anyway, but we saw it without any real interest. My mind was racing: What do we do next? What do we do next?
After about an hour, we finished seeing the temple. When we went back to collect our phones and luggage, Jeroen had missed calls. After making the return call, we quickly decided to head straight back home.
Our entire mindset was down. We certainly didn't expect our trip to end like this.
We checked for trains, but the next direct train from Madurai to Kumbakonam wasn't until 8:15 p.m. that night. We decided we couldn't wait that long.
So, we immediately took a shared auto to the M.G.R. Bus Stand (Madurai Mattuthavani). Our only option was a connected bus route. We decided to go to Trichy first. After a two-hour journey, we reached the Trichy New Bus Stand.
We searched for and found a direct bus to Kumbakonam.
After 8 o'clock, we finally reached our city, Kumbakonam. We picked up our bikes from the parking area and rushed to see Jeroen’s elder sister. We received some happy news: the pain was over, and his sister was resting and sleeping peacefully in the bed.
With that relief, we all went back to our respective homes.
We had planned to visit many places, but in the end, we only saw the temple. The journey back was an unexpected 8 hours of travel. If we had found a correct train timing, the trip would have been a simple 4-hour ride. Instead, we had to take the connected bus route and wait for more than an hour at the Trichy bus stand for the Kumbakonam bus.
Some things in life we simply cannot control. When they happen, we must simply accept them.
That’s the nature of human life.
Thanks for reading.
